The Mezcaleros
Quite possibly one of the longest running, local rock bands in the area, The Mezcaleros have seen several changes to its line up over the years but the sound remains (almost) the same 7 years on. Hard driving rock, metal and even some punk now flesh out the set and with a recent return to the limelight, it certainly works! If you’re a fan of ACDC, Black Sabbath, Metallica or similar, you’re in for a real treat.
Early Days
Prior to some of this afore mentioned changes, the line up consisted of Baz as lead singer (with Dean taking over from Baz, more on that below), Mario on Lead Guitar, Sergio on Bass and Francis on Drums but the new addition of Skippy also on lead Guitar, really adds depth and scope to the songs with wailing guitars, heavy riffs backed up with rhythm and effects that 2 guitars brings to this genre. All of them have a massive passion for their music and this genre in particular, having grown up to the likes of Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Rainbow, Megadeath, Metallica and many many more, its no surprise that they play this music, it was after all, what got them into playing music in the first place!
From those early days 7 years ago and after several large concerts later (mostly motorcycle meetings and organised festivals) the band members each involved themselves with other projects and without really realising or meaning to, the band drifted apart…until now that is.
A Welcome Return
It was their passion for music, especially rock & metal that meant that they never drifted apart as friends though. They still worked on projects together and met at other concerts but there was always the Mezcaleros in the shadows and earlier in 2018, at the beginning of the summer, Dean, Mario, Sergio and Francis agreed to head back to the rehearsal studio for some fun and recapture some of that energy playing that music gave, and they tell us with all honesty, that it wasn’t a plan to reform and play live again, more of a passion to not lose that feeling that their new projects were lacking. It was after a few rehearsals and the inclusion of Skippy to the mix that they realised there might be an opportunity to gig again around their other projects and we’re glad they did!
Opportunity
After a brief chat with the singer, Dean, he described how the Mezcaleros was his baptism of fire here in Spain as it was the first “real” project in which he teamed up with his musical friend, Mario Moriche (more on that in their other projects) and took to the stage.
“I was aksed by Mario to audition for the role of lead singer in the band since the departure of the previous singer Baz had left the band, returning to the UK. I was obviously nervous but also flattered to be given this opportunity as Id seen them play many times and loved the music & the sound and energy they had so I jumped at the chance.”
He continues to tell us of the first time he went on stage:
“The first few concerts were so nerve racking for me, one in particular really stands out. It was my first EVER appearance on stage in Spain, at quite a big rock concert (2nd billing) and in front of a few hundred people too, so I was sh*tting myself. We were delayed going on stage until 2am in the morning and by then I was pretty drunk, in fact I think we all were, including those that came with us, but we muddled through and I had my first experience of the big stage..and I wanted more! I never would’ve thought though, some 7 years later, that we would still fill a venue after not playing for so long together but I guess that extra experience for all of us, me especially, meant it was probably always going to happen!”
Summary
With just a few gigs lined up for the rest of 2018, The Mezcaleros are not going to flood the area with loud rock as they know it’s not everyone’s taste but having seen the reaction they got and the energy they brought to the stage at Bar Zambra at the Turre Fiesta, we think many will enjoy the classic rock sound, old and young. Remember though, if you’re at the front, prepare for the volume! Rock on!
